Healthy Alternative Snack Foods
Making The Next Level commitment may mean that you should make some changes in your diet. My first suggestion is to eliminate the daily consumption of pop and sodas. These drinks are loaded with sugars and artificial sweeteners. Over consumption of these types of beverages can only lead to problems. Keep in mind that an occassional Coke is not going to affect you. Today's other suggestion is to decrease the amount of "junk" foods. Cut down on chips, overbuttered and high fat popcorn, ice cream, and cookies. Notice that I suggest cutting back. Many of those types of foods contain high calories but of little nutritional value.

Flexibility Training
During my more youthful years, flexibility training , was a low priority area on the training totem pole. Weight Training, strength training, speed training and cross training were all ranked higher than stretching and flexibility stuff. However, in retrospect, I now find that FLEXIBILITY is an area that really needs to be kept in better focus. It's value is greater than we sometimes think. That is, if we can keep our bodies as flexible as possible, there is a payoff in improved athletic performance, a decrease in injury and likewise, prevention of injury, and maintaining the range of motion of any particular joint. "Secrets" to Living Longer
OK....You want to add years to your life? Well, a research group did a study on three of the longest living humans on Earth. One group was from the mountain village of Sardinia in Italy. Another from the islands of Okinawa, Japan. The Third was from Loma Linda, California.... a group of Seventh Day Adventists. Residents of these three areas produced a higher rate of centenarians than anywhere else in the world. The researchers discovered five traits that were consistent to all three groups:

Nutrition Segment
One of the major cornerstones of the foundation for getting to The Next Level is the NUTRITION PROGRAM. You may have to make a few changes......but, don't throw that ice cream away just yet!
For starters, begin your next day by thinking FIBER. Adults should be consuming at least 25-35 grams per day. The average American gets 14-15 grams. Obviously, this is an area where we need to make some progress. My future nutrition segments will really be targeting this deficiency.

Commitment and Goal Setting
Let's get it started!!
The other day, I suggested that you take a time out...... make sure that you are ready to make the commitment to changing your life for the better. Keep in mind that it might not be easy. But then, like Coach Woody Hayes used to say, "Nothing in life that comes easy is worth a dime". Sure, we've all received a few handouts now and then. Yeah, it's not too bad. However, it's never quite the same feeling as when you had to go out and earn it on your own. You just feel really good about yourself when you've accomplished the goal. The hard work involved in your exercise program.... no matter what level, is going to enhance your self esteem. You're going to feel better about yourself. It's that simple. Try it. And by the way, there aren't any handouts in fitness and health. YOU have got to earn it. (continued)
