War is known for being bloody and expensive; and so it goes with Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT). Both companies are spending billions on costly infrastructure upgrades as they square off over the future of the web.

MSFT has the bigger cash horde, but GOOG has more willing partners, more talent, and a faster innovation cycle. Whoever wins, GOOG the favorite, it is becoming clear that the real winners will be consumers, rather than investors, as the technology space becomes capital intensive.
